EU schools consider pre-cut apple slices

German company Food Freshly will present pre-cut apple slices as an alternative to whole apples in school meals at this year's Fruit Attraction. The concept has been in use for more than 15 years in countries such as the US and Canada and is now being introduced to European markets.

Research shows that offering pre-cut apples can influence consumption. Studies recorded a 71% increase in apple sales in schools when apples were served in slices rather than whole. Average daily consumption among schoolchildren rose to 238 grams compared with 96 grams for whole apples.

The same studies indicated reduced food waste. Apple discards dropped from 229 grams to 78 grams per student per day, a reduction of more than 65%. Children with braces or dental issues reported that apple slices were easier to eat.

The initiative aligns with the EU school program, which provided €130.6 million in funding for fruit and vegetables in the 2023/2024 school year. In Germany, the program supplied over 9,000 tons of fruit and vegetables to 2.5 million children across more than 25,000 institutions during the 2022/2023 school year.

Food Freshly reports that organic apple slices with a refrigerated shelf life of up to 14 days can be supplied to schools. Common varieties include Gala, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, and regional apples. The slices are treated with vitamin C and minerals without preservatives.

The company states that its role includes expertise in processing, shelf life, food safety, and process optimization, while also working with ministries, schools, and apple processors to develop networks around school nutrition programs.

Food Freshly will be at Fruit Attraction: Hall 8, Booth D18F, IFEMA Madrid.
