U.S. grape cold storage rises to 12.3 million cartons

Cold storage holdings of grapes in the United States as of September 15, 2025, totaled 12,344,395 cartons. This marks a sharp increase compared to 7,969,559 cartons in 2024 and 5,835,713 cartons in 2023, while still above the 9,017,974 cartons recorded in 2022.

Among individual varieties, Other White grapes accounted for the largest share with 4,605,030 cartons, nearly doubling the 2,505,363 cartons stored in 2024. Other Red grapes followed with 2,003,070 cartons, also rising from 889,286 cartons last year. Other Black grapes increased strongly to 551,872 cartons from 107,383 cartons in 2024, though still below the 892,507 cartons in 2022.

Scarlet Royal was the most prominent named variety in storage, with 1,672,640 cartons, down from 1,933,388 cartons last year but above the 693,761 cartons held in 2023. Sweet Globe/Sorbet volumes nearly doubled year-on-year, reaching 1,237,054 cartons compared with 694,447 cartons in 2024. Autumn King also showed growth at 327,830 cartons versus 316,428 cartons in 2024.

Other varieties reported included Great Green with 786,869 cartons, compared to 530,750 cartons in 2024, and Timco with 403,814 cartons, slightly down from 423,690 cartons last year. Red Globe rose significantly to 152,689 cartons, more than doubling the 68,555 cartons recorded in 2024. Autumn Royal volumes totaled 78,020 cartons, higher than 66,012 cartons last year.

Overall, the 2025 report highlights a substantial increase in grape storage volumes across nearly all categories, particularly in the Other White and Other Red groupings. While some named varieties, such as Scarlet Royal, posted slight declines compared with the previous year, the overall inventory reflects expanded holdings well above the past three seasons.
