Americold opens US$100m hub in Kansas City

Americold Realty Trust has opened a new import-export hub in Kansas City, Missouri. The project, valued at more than US$100 million, was developed in partnership with Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC).

The 335,000-square-foot facility is Americold's first on the CPKC rail network and will serve as a hub for the Mexico Midwest Express (MMX), a rail service for refrigerated goods between the United States and Mexico.

According to Americold, the hub features on-site USDA inspections to avoid border delays, container load capacities of more than 50,000 pounds to ease highway congestion, and a 300-mile service radius to support regional food distribution. It also functions as a consolidation point for long-haul shipments, including trade flows between Canada and Mexico.

George Chappelle, CEO of Americold, said the project combines cold storage capabilities with rail logistics to support food movement across North America. Keith Creel, President and CEO of CPKC, described the hub as the first of several planned facilities across the company's rail network. The Kansas City site is part of a broader network of import-export hubs that Americold is developing to support global trade flows.

The facility is expected to create about 190 jobs. Mayor Quinton Lucas said the project highlights the role of partnerships in expanding logistics infrastructure in Kansas City. Tracey Lewis, President and CEO of the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, added that it will contribute to local workforce development.

Governor Mike Kehoe said the development strengthens Missouri's logistics sector, citing the state's central location and infrastructure. Michelle Hataway, Director of the Missouri Department of Economic Development, said the project will create new opportunities across the state.

The opening was supported by the Missouri Partnership, the City of Kansas City, the Economic Development Corporation of Kansas City, KC SmartPort, the Missouri Department of Economic Development, Missouri One Start, Evergy, and Spire.
