The supply of green plantains is tightening and it's expected to stay on the short side throughout the remainder of the year. "Normally supplies start to run short regardless at this time of year. However, this time there were also weather challenges over the past six months or so that have led to this shortage," says Alan Goldberg of A&B Tropical Produce.
The plantains are coming from Ecuador, a country that has seen rains at times that were not conducive to the growth of the fruit. "They've been short for the past two to three weeks and it's looking like it's going to stay like this through the end of the year and into early 2026," says Goldberg, noting that despite the shortage of plantains, the quality is good.

Prices to stay high
As for demand, it's strong given the tighter supply and he anticipates demand to increase through the holiday season. "Prices are very high–they've been climbing steadily over the past two to three weeks," he says, though he notes that the price isn't anticipated to go much higher than it already is. "Though they will definitely stay strong. However it is a year-round item so the market will rebound of course."
