New Zealand exports 13,000 tons of kiwifruit to China

China remains the largest export market for New Zealand kiwifruit, with growing volumes now moving directly through Dongguan in South China's Guangdong province.

A specialized vessel carrying 4,200 metric tons of New Zealand kiwifruit recently docked at Dongguan Port. This was the third direct shipment to South China this year. Since January, Dongguan has received 13,000 tons of New Zealand kiwifruit, with the city gradually building a fruit import logistics network that covers the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

For New Zealand exporters, Dongguan's role is becoming increasingly important as a distribution hub. Direct shipments shorten the supply chain and support access to South China's consumer markets, where demand for imported kiwifruit remains strong.

Trade figures highlight the scale of Dongguan's market. In the first eight months of 2025, the city recorded total foreign trade of 1.03 trillion yuan (about US$144.8 billion), according to Huangpu Customs. Imports increased 24.9% to 395.92 billion yuan (US$55.6 billion), reflecting its expanding role as a gateway for international goods.

While fresh produce imports, including kiwifruit, are growing, Dongguan continues to be a major manufacturing base. The city is a production centre for bicycles and a key exporter of mechanical and electrical products. From January to August, exports of mechanical and electrical goods reached 439.43 billion yuan (US$61.8 billion), while imports in the same category rose 33.6% to 344.6 billion yuan (US$48.5 billion).

For New Zealand kiwifruit growers, Dongguan's import network highlights how China's logistics and consumption patterns are evolving. Increased direct shipments into South China broaden market access beyond the traditional northern entry points and strengthen year-round distribution options.
