Algerian Deglet Nour season is about to start

Algerian Deglet Nour dates are arriving on the market. "This season marks a significant improvement on the previous one, in terms of both volume and quality," says Ahmed Mayof, an Algerian exporter.

According to Mayof, the discrepancy between the two seasons is due to climatic conditions. He explains, 'The climate was harsh last year and there was insufficient rainfall. This year is the complete opposite, and we have been able to obtain high-quality dates in large sizes and increased volume. Harvesting is now gradually underway, and consistent quality harvests will be available in about ten days."

Last season, some European importers of Algerian Deglet Nour dates reported logistical complications due to long delays at ports of departure. Mayof comments: "We are aware of this and have taken action by setting up a company and a facility in Spain for the storage and distribution of our dates to the European market. We will deal with any logistical issues ourselves and ensure smooth deliveries to our customers from Almería. This will make it easier for our customers to source dates and give us an advantage over competitors, whether they are Algerian or Tunisian."

Thanks to this Spanish operation, the exporter also hopes to supply the Moroccan market. Trade between Algeria and Morocco has come to a standstill due to a diplomatic crisis between the neighbouring countries. The exporter states: 'Last season, I was unable to supply my customers in Morocco, but I hope to do so this season through re-exportation from Spain. The transit time to Morocco via Spain is very short, at no more than three days. However, we will only know after running a trial in November whether shipments can be cleared through customs upon arrival."

The exporter is confident about the commercial prospects in Europe: 'We expect strong demand across Europe thanks to the enhanced quality of our dates this year. Algerian Deglet Nour dates are well known and highly appreciated there, and we anticipate being very busy in the two months leading up to Ramadan."
