Bangladesh mango exports rise 66% in 2025

Bangladesh mango exports have risen in 2025, with shipments reaching 2,194 tons by the end of September, up 66% from 2024, when 1,321 tons were exported. In 2023, exports totaled 3,100 tons. Officials said improved quality and a higher share of fruit meeting export standards supported this year's performance.

Mango exports from Bangladesh began in 2015, initially targeting Bangladeshi communities in the UK, Italy, and the Middle East. The market has since expanded, with China starting imports and expressing interest in further supply.

Bangladesh produces 2.4–2.5 million tons of mangoes annually, with domestic sales valued at Tk 13,000–14,000 crore (US$117–126 million). Cultivation spans 23 districts with 72 varieties, though only seven or eight are exported. Amrapali accounts for about 80% of shipments, with other exportable varieties including Himsagar, Langra, BARI-4, and Fajli.

"Improving both the quality and quantity of mango production has significantly contributed to this year's rebound," said Mohammad Arifur Rahman, director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) exportable mango production project. He noted, however, that high air freight charges continue to restrict potential.

According to exporters, freight costs rose two to three times last year compared with normal rates. Mohammad Mansur, general secretary of the Bangladesh Fruits, Vegetables and Allied Products Exporters Association, said, "High freight costs and inadequate infrastructure, such as the absence of vapour heat treatment facilities, limit our ability to compete in key international markets." He added that government investment in modern processing and treatment plants is needed.

This year, Bangladeshi mangoes were exported to 26 countries. The UK imported 686 tons, followed by Saudi Arabia with 356 tons, Italy with 264 tons, Kuwait with 167 tons, and Qatar with 163 tons. China imported five tons. UK demand is driven largely by its South Asian community, while Middle Eastern trade is supported by both expatriates and local consumers.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) estimated global fresh mango exports at 2.1–2.2 million tons in 2024, with Bangladesh accounting for only 0.1% of the total. Sorof Uddin, principal scientific officer at the Regional Horticulture Research Station in Chapainawabganj, said, "Despite producing 24–25 lakh tons of mangoes every year, Bangladesh has not built the infrastructure or policies required to raise exports." He noted current capacity is capped at about 4,000 tons, with 8,000 tons seen as an upper limit even with coordinated measures.

Agriculture Adviser Lt Gen (Retired) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the government is working to improve quality and expand markets. Japan and Australia have shown interest in imports, adding to existing demand from China.
