Greater supply of avocados from Mexico, California and Peru winding down

Avocado supply continues to be ample and steady. "We have good supply coming in from Mexico," says Calavo Growers Inc.'s Peter Shore, adding that there's fruit of all sizes available in an even-sized curve. "Right now, Mexico is coming into its primary season for avocados." Good avocado supply is expected to continue from Mexico through December and into the new year.

Add to that California production–the state is 94 percent harvested in its season, though there is still plenty of fruit available from California as well. "There's more fruit available overall with more from Mexico and California, as well as Peru right now," says Shore. California and Peru will conclude their seasons in October.

Colombia to pick up next month
On top of this, light supply is coming from Colombia, though shipments from there to the U.S. are expected to arrive heading into late October.

As for demand, it too is good. "Retailers are promoting avocados and there's good ad activity," Shore says. "Demand typically picks up in the fall and there are also promotions centered around football and fall holidays."

On avocado pricing, it is very promotable and quite a bit lower than this time last year. "I think we will see good steady promotable pricing on avocados through the fall," says Shore.
