Malaga's agricultural sector is in luck this year after two consecutive seasons in which production has been reduced due to the impact of adverse weather conditions; however, it will also have to compete with a larger supply from Brazil in Europe. Looking to the future, the potential for mango production in Malaga is still far from reaching its peak, according to the CEO of the Malaga-based company Sigfrido, which this year is consolidating its position as one of the main avocado importers.
"This season, we are again achieving some fairly positive production figures in Malaga and Granada, where volumes have tripled compared to the previous season. It is worth recalling that in recent years, drought and heat waves have severely affected the blossom," says Sigfrido Molina, CEO and founder of Sigfrido Fruit, a producer, importer, and exporter of avocado and mango.

"With a higher production in the market, price prospects are logically not as positive. Especially if we take into account that Brazil, which usually reduces its exports to Europe when the Spanish season begins to focus more on the United States, is redirecting a lot of fruit to Europe due to the 50% tariffs applied this year by Trump," says Sigfrido.
"Moreover, unlike avocados, mangoes cannot be left on the tree for long when ripe, so the pressure increases. There is no doubt that the biggest handicap for Malaga's mangoes is that they are only available for a little more than two months. Thus, whoever has a good brand and knows how to promote it will have an edge. However, during these two months, we'll have many producers with high quality and therefore a lot of competition. That's just how the free market works," he says.
According to Sigfrido Molina, mango production in Spain has not yet reached its maximum potential. "Due to the severe drought that Malaga's agricultural sector has been dealing with for eight years, many avocado fields have been replaced by mangoes, which have yet to come into production. Therefore, the productive potential of mangoes is expected to increase in the coming years."
"This year, we have become one of the main avocado importers"
Avocado is the most important product for Sigfrido Fruit, which has increased its turnover by 20% this year, mainly due to avocado imports. "We have been importing fruit since the company was founded twelve years ago, but this year we have established ourselves as one of the main avocado importers in Spain, especially from Peru."

"Peru is soon set to become the main avocado-producing and exporting country in the world and is already almost capable of producing all year round, with one of the highest quality standards, growing new varieties in different latitudes. Peruvian avocados are already an essential product," says Sigfrido Molina. "We will continue betting on it and reaching out to any expanding Peruvian companies in need of a reliable partner in Europe."
For the last two years, Spain has become Sigfrido's main market, followed by France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy.
The company will once again be present at Fruit Attraction, between September 30 and October 2 in Madrid, where it will have a larger display area, at stand 9D22 in Hall 9.
