Canadian health authorities have issued a public health notice regarding an ongoing outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to pistachios and pistachio-containing products. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has published several recalls, covering multiple brands and products, after outbreak strains were detected in both pistachio samples and pistachio-based chocolates and pastries.
According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, 105 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported across six provinces. Quebec accounts for the majority with 66 cases, followed by Ontario with 27, British Columbia with six, Alberta with four, New Brunswick with one, and Manitoba with one. Sixteen people have been hospitalized, though no deaths have been reported. Those affected range in age from two to 95 years, with 75% of cases reported among women.

People became ill between early March and early September 2025. Officials warn that more cases may still be reported due to the lag time between illness onset and confirmation. Researchers estimate that for every confirmed Salmonella case, as many as 26 additional cases may go unreported.
Consumers, retailers, and food service operators are advised not to consume, sell, or distribute any of the recalled pistachios or related products. Items should be returned to the point of purchase or discarded. The Quebec Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPAQ) has also issued separate recall warnings for pistachio-containing items.
Most Salmonella infections resolve without treatment within a week, but the illness can cause severe complications, particularly among young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with weakened immune systems. Symptoms typically begin 6 to 72 hours after exposure and may include fever, chills, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and headache.
The outbreak investigation remains active. Canadian authorities continue to monitor the situation and may identify additional sources or products. Updates, including the full list of recalled products, are available on the CFIA Food Safety Investigation page and the Recalls and Safety Alerts website.
