New Zealand recalls green garlic over salmonella risk

New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) is supporting Vimms Enterprise Limited in recalling a batch of Deep brand Green Garlic due to the possible presence of Salmonella. The affected product is Deep brand Green Garlic (340g) with a use-by date of 29 November 2026 and a batch marking of IN25151K.

According to Vincent Arbuckle, deputy director-general of NZFS, "Salmonellosis can be serious, so people mustn't eat the affected product. Affected products should not be consumed unless the products are cooked thoroughly (piping hot all the way through), or you can return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If that's not possible, throw it out." The recalled product was sold at ethnic supermarkets throughout New Zealand.

NZFS stated that symptoms of salmonellosis can appear within 12 to 72 hours and include abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Illness usually lasts between four and seven days, but in more severe cases, it can extend up to 10 days. Consumers who have eaten the product and are concerned about their health are advised to contact a health professional or call Healthline on 0800 611 116. NZFS has not received any notifications of illness linked to this recall.

The product, imported from India, has been removed from shelves and has not been re-exported. The recall expands on an earlier recall by Vimms Enterprise Limited on 28 August, which involved Deep brand Sprouted Mat, Sprouted Moong, and Surti Undhiu Mix. "NZFS is in close contact with the importer, Vimms Enterprise Limited, to understand how this happened, as well as working with other jurisdictions where products have also been recalled," Arbuckle said.
