New Zealand recalls Deep beans over salmonella

Vimm Enterprises has recalled Deep-brand sprouted mat, moong beans, and surti undhiu mix in New Zealand due to potential salmonella contamination.

"Salmonellosis can be serious, so it is important that people do not eat these products," said NZ Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle. "If you have any at home, you can return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If that's not possible, throw it out."

The recall applies to all batches and dates of the products. Arbuckle explained that symptoms of salmonellosis may appear within 12 to 72 hours and include abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Illness generally lasts four to seven days, but in more severe cases can extend to 10 days and lead to further complications. "If you have consumed any of this product and are concerned for your health, contact your health professional, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for free advice," he said.

The sprouted mat and moong beans were sold at Arjun Supermarket in New Lynn, Lotus Supermarket in Manukau, and Yogiji's Supermarket in Henderson. The surti undhiu mix (vegetable mix) was also sold in ethnic supermarkets nationwide.

NZ Food Safety confirmed that there have been no reports of illness in New Zealand linked to these products. The affected items were imported and had already been subject to recalls in the United States and Australia. Products have been removed from New Zealand shelves and have not been re-exported.

"As is our usual practice, NZFS will work with importers to understand how the contamination occurred and prevent its recurrence," Arbuckle added.

NZ Food Safety noted that most imported food sold in New Zealand is safe, but occasional problems can arise.
