Spain and Morocco seize 11 tons of cannabis in melon shipments

The Spanish National Police announced on Tuesday the seizure of more than 11 tons of cannabis in two separate operations carried out within a week in Málaga and Algeciras. The operations were conducted in coordination with Morocco's General Directorate for National Security (DGSN).

According to the Spanish police, the investigations were supervised by the Special Anti-Drug Prosecutor's Office of the National Court and that of the Campo de Gibraltar. They led to the dismantling of a criminal organization operating between Spain and Morocco and the arrest of ten individuals, all placed in pre-trial detention.

The first operation took place on September 5, when authorities intercepted a van that had arrived at the port of Tangier. The vehicle was transporting 1.8 tons of hashish concealed inside furniture and hidden compartments. Four suspects were arrested. The seizure also included over US$15,000 in cash, four vehicles, and eight mobile phones.

On September 10, a refrigerated truck coming from Algeciras was intercepted in Málaga. It was carrying 9.3 tons of cannabis hidden among pallets of melons. The truck, its trailer, and two escort vehicles were seized, and six people were arrested.

The Spanish police noted that the investigation began in July, following an exchange of information between the Moroccan DGSN and the Spanish National Police. This cooperation made it possible to identify the criminal group and plan the interception operations.
