Rocha pear harvest in Portugal stays low with smaller sizes

The 2025 Rocha pear harvest from members of Portugal's ANP reached 115,990 tons, almost identical to the 2024 season, with a 1 per cent increase. The volume is still about half of what was recorded in 2021. National production is estimated at 129,000 tons, with ANP members accounting for 89 per cent of the total.

This is the fourth consecutive year in which production has fallen below potential. The shortfall is mainly attributed to adverse weather conditions and ongoing phytosanitary issues, which have also led to higher production costs.

The crop is dominated by smaller sizes. Around 60 per cent of the pears measure 60 millimetres or less in diameter, while less than 20 per cent are above 65 millimetres.

ANP stated that it will continue to focus on supplying its traditional markets with PDO Pera Rocha do Oeste while working to maintain the long-term sustainability of producers.
