The Iranian apple season is progressing steadily, with strong demand from GCC countries and Pakistan continuing to emerge as a dynamic market. This is according to Payam Mohammadi Aghdam, Iranian exporter and CEO of Holden Harvest.

The season began in late August with lower production volumes than the previous season, according to the exporter. He adds: "Overall production is lower than last year, particularly in key regions such as Maragheh and Mianeh, which are renowned for producing some of Iran's highest quality apples. Despite the lower volumes, fruit quality remains excellent, with a good supply of medium to large fruit. The export season began in late August and will continue until late October. However, thanks to modern cold storage facilities, we are able to extend exports until March or even April of the following year."
Prices have risen this season without a significant impact on the market, according to Aghdam. He explains: "Domestic prices in Iranian rials have increased significantly compared to last season, due to higher production and operating costs. However, due to the depreciation of the rial against the US dollar, Iranian apples remain competitive in terms of price and attractiveness on international markets."

"However, rising transport costs have slowed our exports to certain destinations in Eastern Europe. On the other hand, demand from GCC countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Qatar remains strong and steady. India, Iraq, and, more recently, Pakistan also remain important markets," Aghdam continues.
The increase in Pakistani demand for Iranian apples is a recent trend reported by Iranian exporters, and it continues this season as well. According to Aghdam, it can be explained by fluctuations in Indian production, but also stems from the advantages that Iranian origin enjoys. He explains, "We were able to seize the opportunity created by gaps in the Pakistani market mainly due to geographic proximity, competitive prices, and strong consumer preference for Iranian Red Delicious apples. The shorter transit time compared to other origins helps maintain freshness, and Iranian apples fit well with the size and taste profile that the Pakistani market prefers."
