India's grape exporters are strongly optimistic about the incoming season following increased scale, varieties, and market opportunities, says Shantanu Aher, Director at Narmada Fresh Fruit Exports, forecasting a near doubling of export volumes on the back of robust vineyard performance and strong international demand.
Reflecting on the 2024/25 campaign, Aher describes a steady output. "We packed around 1,00,000 boxes of Thompson Seedless grapes, equating to shipments of around 500 metric tons dispatched under the brand Niva Fresh. Last season featured good berry size, sweetness, and extended shelf life, which met standards for Europe-bound exports. Rotterdam served as the main hub, facilitating wider distribution across the European Union."

Looking ahead, Aher highlights: "A projection of 2,00,000 boxes to double Narmada Fresh' shipments to 1,000 metric tons. Quality expectations are better this year, thanks to careful vineyard practices projected to deliver bigger berries, sweeter fruit, and strong shelf life." The 2025 export window is set to run from January through April, matching demand cycles in Europe, with Rotterdam continuing to be the main entry port.
Aher notes higher price realizations in the upcoming season, which he attributes to the reputation Indian grapes have earned abroad, resulting in stable buyer demand. "Furthermore, better pricing will support ongoing improvements in quality standards and supply-chain investments while ensuring farmers' efforts are duly rewarded," he adds.

According to Aher, global buyers prefer seedless grapes, with Thompson and Crimson Seedless varieties leading orders, "These varieties have become essential for European retail, due to their sweetness and appearance. In 2025, demand for red and black seedless grapes is expected to climb, owing to their high antioxidant content and appealing color. These varieties typically fetch better rates than traditional green grapes, making them favorable for both consumers and retailers," he adds.
Narmada Fresh Fruit Exports plans to diversify from Thompson Seeds and will introduce Crimson and Black Seedless grapes to meet the shifting preferences of buyers in Russia, Europe, and the Middle East. Aher mentions, "Next season's varietal mix and expanded reach into markets like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai will help capture new opportunities."

Summing up, Aher says, "India's grape industry is built on consistent quality, supply chain strength, and strong partnerships with its farmers. With varietal innovation and market expansion, we aim to deliver enhanced, improved outcomes for both our growers and international buyers in the coming years."
