“Official market access process shows positive progress”

Belgian Truval Conference pear presented at Osaka World Expo

In the presence of Belgian federal ministers Clarinval (Agriculture & Economy) and Matz (Public Service and Modernisation), Belgian Fruit Valley presented the Belgian TRUVAL Conference pear at the World Expo in Osaka on Sunday, 14 September, during the National Holiday in the Belgian Pavilion, says Thomas Similion of Belgian Fruit Valley.

"Although we do not yet have official market access, this symbolic presence shows that the process is moving in the right direction," explains Marc Evrard of Belgian Fruit Valley. "The presentation indicates that progress is being made and highlights the strong appreciation from Japanese importers, retailers, and consumers. Minister Clarinval will hold further discussions with his Japanese counterpart later this week to advance the dossier. It is important that both countries reach an agreement at the policy level."

The pears came from specially selected BelOrta growers' orchards, in line with Japan's quarantine requirements. "Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) made the presentation possible through a special procedure. The federal representation at the Belgian Embassy in Tokyo gave their full support to make this happen," Thomas said.

"The expertise and dedication of our partners at Dole Japan and Itochu Corp were crucial. Without their guidance and support at every stage of the process, this would not have been possible. Feedback from all attendees was extremely positive. This reinforces our belief in the potential of the Belgian Conference pear in the Japanese market as a healthy and delicious part of the consumer's diet."
