UK: Tesco raises profit outlook after strong summer
Tesco, Britain's biggest supermarket group, raised its full-year profit forecast, saying it benefited from an unusually hot summer and won market share from rivals. The group, whose share of Britain's grocery market has grown this year to 28.4%, said it now expected full year 2025/26 adjusted operating profit of between 2.9bln pounds and 3.1bln pounds ($3.9-$4.2bln), up from previous guidance of between 2.7bln pounds and 3.0bln pounds.

The UK's two largest independent retail co-operatives - The Midcounties Co-operative and Central Co-op - have announced that they are in advanced discussions about a merger. If approved, the combined Society would unite over one million members, 13,000 colleagues and annual sales of £1.8bln, with a portfolio of specialist businesses including more than 500 food stores.

Prosus successfully completes tender offer for Just Eat Takeaway.com
Prosus reported: "Prosus is pleased to announce the successful completion of the tender offer for Just Eat Takeaway.com (JET). Very strong support from JET shareholders means the offer has exceeded the Acceptance Threshold, with 90.13% of JET shares tendered. The deal has now been declared unconditional, following its swift approval by the European Commission in August 2025".

US: Study cautions SNAP purchase restrictions could cost retailers $1.6bln to implement
FMI - The Food Industry Association reported: 'The National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS), National Grocers Association, and FMI - The Food Industry Association, released the "SNAP Restrictions Impact Analysis", which estimates the significant costs food retailers will face under proposed restrictions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)'. The Impact Analysis reveals that the total up-front cost from SNAP restrictions is projected to be: $1bln for convenience stores; $305.1mln for supermarkets; $11.8mln for small-format stores; and $215.5mln for supercenters.

Amazon launches new private label grocery brand
Amazon has launched Amazon Grocery, a new private label brand that includes more than 1,000 food items, including milk, olive oil, fresh produce, meat, and seafood. Most products are priced at less than $5. According to the company, the new private label brand unites the company's Amazon Fresh and Happy Belly brands into one line, available through both Amazon.com and Amazon Fresh stores.

US: Sprouts Farmers Market plans for significant expansion
Phoenix-based Sprouts Farmers Market has had a busy year and now has surpassed 450 stores across more than 24 states. The grocer is eyeing long-term growth to as many as 1,400 locations nationwide, CEO Jack Sinclair said during a presentation at the Groceryshop conference. Sinclair said that the company's store growth relies on building out distribution centers that can support the chain's reliance on produce. According to Sinclair, fresh produce accounts for 20% of Sprouts' sales, with organic fresh produce representing between 55% and 60% of those sales.

Midwestern superstore chain Meijer is preparing to expand its presence in the Rust Belt, setting its sights now on Western Pennsylvania. "Building on our success in Northeast Ohio and the amazing response we've received from those communities, we have started acquiring properties in Western Pennsylvania", Erin Cataldo, Meijer external communications manager, said in a statement provided to Progressive Grocer.
