Rinus Wisse (Wiscomex): "Strong onion exports with Africa in the lead"

Win another free container of Dutch yellow onions at Fruit Attraction

© Wiscomex bv"The first three weeks of September, we had extremely busy onion export weeks. This week is slightly quieter, and next week, with Fruit Attraction in Madrid in mind, I expect the same picture," says Rinus Wisse of Wiscomex from Yerseke. "The price of onions is slightly under pressure. Last week prices already dropped by a cent and this week by another half a cent, but I expect a stable market in the coming weeks."

"Africa is currently dominating the volumes, with other markets following behind. It's not a matter of export figures, but much will depend on how the quality actually holds up. Poland is not really active on the market yet, which means the inferior onions are not being cleared. At the same time, the quality of the onions going into bags is phenomenal, and customers have been very satisfied with them throughout the season," says the exporter.

Positive market situation
"All in all, it is a positive market. But overall, we have a lot more onions, as do our neighbouring countries. I expect exports to continue at least until the turn of the year and do not foresee extreme price fluctuations. Unless the VTA in October paints a shocking picture and growers start to get nervous," Rinus continues.

"With a relatively low price, we are competitive in many markets. You are not going to push a country like China off the market in Malaysia, for example, but people are placing orders for the finer onions here. With red onions, we see an extreme price difference between the grades. The coarse sizes are moving reasonably, and the supers are performing well, with a market like the Philippines showing some demand for triplets, but we are not managing to sell the medium grades. With red onions, this results in a price difference of 33 cents between size 40-60 and the supers."

Win campaign
As during Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Wiscomex will hold a prize draw at its stand (Hall 6-D06) during Fruit Attraction in Madrid. All foreign onion importers visiting the stand will have a chance to win a free container of yellow onions (30,000 kg). In Berlin, the winning business card drawn by Muriel Halling of the Holland Fresh Group belonged to Frederic Thelliez, working at the Rungis market in Paris. We will know next week who the winner in Madrid will be!
