New Zealand citrus sector holds first awards in Gisborne

Gisborne hosted the inaugural Citrus New Zealand Awards dinner, with more than 140 growers, industry representatives, and guests attending to acknowledge sector achievements.

The event followed a day of technical workshops on 2D trellising, spatial motion, and spray optimization, alongside the organization's Annual General Meeting. During the AGM, Hugh Ritchie was appointed Independent Chairperson, and Murray Kendrew was confirmed as a grower director.

Industry awards
Awards were presented across several categories. James Torrie received the Emerging Leader Award, recognizing leadership potential and new approaches. The Innovation Award went to 73 Citrus for advances in citrus production.

Phil Evans was recognised with the Excellence in Orchard Sustainability and Practice Award for contributions to sustainable production methods. John MacPherson was named Industry Champion for his service to the sector and became the fourth recipient of Life Membership.

Governance and industry direction
Citrus New Zealand Interim Chair Tam Jex-Blake said the board appointments highlighted the organisation's focus on governance and grower-led leadership. "The appointment of Hugh and Murray, with their respective skill sets, strengthens Citrus New Zealand as we move forward and reflects the Board's commitment to supporting growers and the future direction of our industry," Jex-Blake stated.

He added: "The evening was also about recognising the people and businesses driving citrus forward. It was inspiring to see growers, industry partners, and supporters come together in Gisborne to applaud the incredible achievements of our industry peers."

Guests and participation
Attendees included National MP Dana Kirkpatrick, Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stoltz, and Horticulture New Zealand Chair Bernardine Guilleux. They joined growers and sector partners in acknowledging the award recipients and industry contributions.

The awards dinner was the first event of its kind for Citrus New Zealand, designed to highlight performance, innovation, and long-term service across the sector.
