Xavier Halsberghe, Eurofresh:

"Explosive growth in demand for organic mango and avocado"

Spanish mango production this year has been the highest in years, according to Xavier Halsberghe of the Spanish company Eurofresh, which focuses on growing mangoes and avocados in five countries. "We have very good productions, also because we have had enough water this year," he says.

However, the seller notes that the US import duties of 50% are putting some pressure on volumes in the European market, though Xavier emphasizes that Spanish mangoes always stand out in terms of quality. "It makes quite a difference whether you have a transit time of two weeks or two days."

The company markets mangoes and avocados, both organically through Eurofresh under the BIORIGIN5 brand and conventionally through its second branch, Avocoop, under the ORIGIN5 brand. "We grow in five origins on an area of more than 3,000 hectares: Chile, Peru, Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Spain," Xavier explains. "We guarantee quality and a homogeneous ripening process in these brands."

Meanwhile, the Spanish avocado season is also about to start, and the outlook is positive, according to Xavier. "We were pioneers in introducing organic avocados in Peru, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic. In Peru and the Dominican Republic, we mainly grow organic avocados, but of course also conventional ones. The market for organic is booming. Supply can barely keep up with demand."

Eurofresh's main markets are Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, and Spain, with sales now being developed in the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. The company also operates a warehouse in Poeldijk. "A must in terms of logistics. We also have ripening cells in Spain and the Netherlands," says Xavier. "What makes us unique is that we are present from flower to packaging. In every country where we are active, we work with our own staff, which makes our quality a guarantee."
