“We’ve developed a more natural packaging solution that enhances consumer appeal”

Home compostable and recyclable packaging in the form of punnets and trays has found a place in the fresh produce segment, and the innovation continues. Earlier this year, an advancement in molded fiber packaging was launched, called Etched Earthcycle. Instead of using paper labels or stickers on the packaging, the branding, logos, as well as mandatory pack information are etched directly onto the fiber surface. "This eliminates the need for added materials or adhesives, making the pack fully fiber-based, renewable, and widely recyclable," says Shannon Boase with CKF, Inc., manufacturer of the Earthcycle brand of fresh produce packaging. It takes the traditional fiber packaging one step further and although this innovation eliminates extra components, it keeps the protective qualities and sustainability benefits of molded fiber intact.

High-value produce
Etched Earthcycle, launched in partnership with leading grocery retailers and produce suppliers, is currently available in the same range of punnets as the existing Earthcycle line. More sizes will be added as adoption expands. "This new packaging option is particularly well-suited for high value produce categories where branding and consumer communication are important," shared Boase. These include berries, grapes, avocados, and tomatoes. It is also suitable for markets where regulatory mandates require on-pack labeling.

Enhanced brand impression
The new packaging was created to help retailers and growers further reduce packaging waste. Removing labels and adhesives not only makes the packaging more circular but also offers brands a natural and sustainable way of telling their story directly on the pack. "It simplifies recycling, reduces cost and complexity, and enhances the brand impression on the shelf."

"We're excited about the possibilities the Etched Earthcycle design will bring – an elegant, straightforward solution that reduces packaging waste while reinforcing our sustainability commitment," said Leona Neill, Director of Marketing and Packaging at Red Sun Farms. "Consumers will immediately recognize its distinct look, creating a strong impact on the shelf."

Combining sustainability and consumer appeal
"This innovation reflects CKF's ongoing commitment to packaging innovation that helps growers and retailers achieve their sustainability goals while enhancing consumer appeal," said Boase. This is the next step in the Earthcycle journey, which began over a decade ago when the company pioneered the first top-sealable molded fiber punnet. "With Etched Earthcycle, we're once again setting a new standard for sustainable packaging," Boase finished.
