Netherlands field trials showcase new celery varieties

As part of the Seed Meets Technology week, field trials are underway in the Netherlands from 23 to 25 September. The trials cover 1,300 m² of vegetable plots, featuring more than a hundred varieties across multiple crops.

Celery is a key focus, with new dual-purpose varieties on display. Mendel is noted for dark green leaves, high petiole count, uniform knuckles, and resistance to fusarium race 2. Curie, another dual-purpose type, is described as fast-maturing with similar leaf characteristics and petiole numbers.

In parsnip, TZ 7508 is highlighted for its uniform shape, colour, and pre-packing suitability, while TZ 5152 is designed for main to late season production with canker tolerance and consistent uniformity.

Leek trials feature TZ 8380, a mid-early to main season type with shank quality, and TZ 8382, a main season leek with thrip tolerance and balanced leaf and shank traits. Kale and other brassicas also form part of the programme.

Wild rocket breeding focuses on bolting resistance, mildew tolerance, and leaf serration, with both commercial and breeding lines on view. Coriander varieties Flamenco and Rumba are also included, with Flamenco suited for winter production in warmer climates and Rumba adapted to cooler summer conditions.

Pumpkin varieties such as Wicked and Zombie, bred in the UK, complete the display.

The event allows growers and industry professionals to assess performance in the field across multiple vegetable categories.
