Westfalia Fruit will present several initiatives on varietal development, post-harvest sustainability, and market collaboration at Fruit Attraction 2025 in Madrid, from 30 September to 2 October. The company's program includes new research on avocado breeding, trials in shelf-life extension, and developments in customer collaboration strategies.
Avocado variety library
Westfalia will display what it describes as the world's largest avocado variety library, which contains more than 140 cultivars. The collection forms part of its Orchard of the Future project, where DNA technologies, artificial intelligence, and precision breeding methods are being used to develop cultivars adapted to changing consumer demand, emerging markets, and climate pressures.
Post-harvest research
In cooperation with Swiss agri-tech company AgroSustain, Westfalia is trialing Afondo, an edible coating for avocados. The coating is designed to extend shelf-life and reduce food losses, while also cutting fungicide use by more than half. According to the companies, the trials could provide both local and international growers and distributors with alternative post-harvest options.

Market collaboration
Westfalia has recently formed a Customer Development Team, led by Global Head of Customer Marketing and Development, Dani Busseni. The team is tasked with translating market data into commercial strategies and working with retailers and foodservice partners on avocado sales in both fresh and convenience segments.
The company states that these initiatives reflect its focus on research, sustainable supply chains, and customer collaboration in the avocado category. Westfalia's exhibit will be located in Hall 10, stand 10C07 at Fruit Attraction 2025.
