Manuel Baides, manager of Author Fresh:

"We aim to be the first company able to supply kakis 12 months a year"

The Rojo Brillante kaki harvest is just around the corner in Spain, and production is expected to be greater than last season, when it was significantly reduced due to adverse weather conditions.

"Our Rojo Brillante kaki season will start in week 38. Thanks to tests and trials carried out in the field, we have managed to bring the harvest forward compared to previous years," says Manuel Baides, manager of Author Fresh, until recently known as Fruta de Autor.

In addition to presenting itself under its new name, the Valencian company has also announced its new project for the year-round distribution of kakis. "We aim to become the first company in the world capable of supplying kakis 12 months a year," says Manuel Baides.

"We have been working for years with growers in Australia, Brazil, South Africa, and Uruguay, and the project to achieve a continuous supply, starting with the domestic season and continuing with other sources, is almost ready. The supply will be complemented with Sharon-type varieties and air shipments," says the manager of Author Fresh.

This summer, the Valencian company has imported 20 containers from Uruguay, one of the firm's sources for Rojo Brillante kakis. "We have been selling Uruguayan kakis in the summer months for some years now, and we have seen that, although demand is slightly lower due to the large presence of stone fruit on the shelves, it is interesting for consumers for kakis to be permanently available," says Baides.

"We are not aiming to offer large volumes, but rather to focus on quality, as befits our ROXO brand," says Baides. "The next edition of Fruit Attraction in Madrid, to be held between September 30 and October 2, will be the perfect setting to welcome all those chains or distributors that are interested in participating in this project."

As far as this season is concerned, the manager of Author Fresh says that good quality is expected, although sizes will be smaller than usual at the start of the season due to the impact of the last heat wave. "Fortunately, the impact of pests has been more limited, which translates into more and better fruit."

Purchases at the source have started with higher prices compared to last season, with averages reaching 0.70 euros per kilo for the best batches. "Kakis are bought for higher prices this year, but it must be taken into account that production, packaging, and transport costs have risen. We have just had an import season with good prices, so we are expecting a receptive market and good demand from the start," says Manuel Baides.

Author Fresh supplies its fruit to the domestic market, as well as to the rest of Europe, and it also does container and air shipments to countries outside Europe.

The company will be taking part as an exhibitor in Fruit Attraction. It will be welcoming visitors to stand 3E054 in Hall 3.
