Peruvian asparagus maintains a global presence

Peruvian asparagus, produced year-round, remains one of Peru's key agro-export products. In 2024, the global market for this vegetable was valued at approximately $26 billion and is expected to grow at a rate of roughly 5% annually over the next decade. Still, only about 10% of this demand is met through international trade, as much of it in countries like the United States, China, and Europe relies on local production.

Global asparagus production is projected to reach 10.7 million metric tons by 2026, led by China, with Mexico, Germany, Peru, and the United States following. These countries together supply over 80% of the world's asparagus. The increase in production reflects growing consumer preference for healthy, plant-based diets, elevating asparagus to superfood status because of its nutritional benefits and low calorie count.

Peru has solidified its position as the second-largest global exporter, operating in over 80 countries. Its strength lies in continuous, year-round production, allowing it to serve international markets during times when European supply decreases. Countries like Spain, Italy, and Greece focus their seasons from March to May, while Peru strategically supplies during key commercial periods, which has been critical in strengthening its competitiveness.

During the 2025 season, from January to August, Peru exported 72,962 tons of asparagus valued at $256 million. This represents a 20% increase in volume but only a 1% rise in value, mainly due to a 16% decline in the average price, which was $3.50 per kilo. The volume increase was driven by favorable weather conditions that boosted productivity, while the shorter European season, especially in Spain, helped Peru maintain its market share.

Peruvian production primarily spans approximately 28,000 hectares, with La Libertad accounting for 50%, Lambayeque for 21%, and Ica for 20%. Although there is a general trend of declining cultivated areas due to falling prices and a shift toward more profitable crops amid climate change, some companies plan to expand by 100 to 150 hectares by 2025. If these plans materialize, production is expected to surpass last year's volume by over 25%.

The sector faces notable challenges. Price pressure is increasing in markets where local producers have logistical advantages, while high shipping costs— which can add up to two dollars per kilogram exported—lower profit margins. Additionally, there is direct competition from Mexico in North America and from Spain in Europe.

Nonetheless, opportunities remain. The adoption of sustainable technologies, such as harnessing solar energy in fields and processing plants, offers operational savings and enhances the product's international image. Similarly, expanding into emerging markets like Brazil—where some companies have tripled shipments—and earning high-value certifications like zero pesticide residues (ZRP) provide competitive advantages that strengthen Peruvian asparagus's position.

The industry stands at a pivotal point, with increasing export volumes amid limited profitability due to falling prices and rising logistical costs. To build a sustainable future, experts suggest improving commercial intelligence, developing more effective pricing strategies, diversifying markets into South America and the Asia-Pacific region, and enhancing coordination among producers, exporters, and relevant authorities. A unified strategy will be crucial to maintaining Peru's presence on the global stage.
