Ukraine trials Spanish almond varieties

In Ukraine, conditions are emerging for the development of industrial almond production. The first harvests have been recorded at the nursery "Almond Gardens" near Svitlovodsk in the Kirovohrad region, where trees produced fruit in their third year after planting, according to the Ukrainian Nut Association, reported by agronews.ua.

On September 12, the international scientific and practical conference "Nut Strategy of Ukraine. Development of industrial almond orchards" was held in Svitlovodsk, Kirovohrad region. More than one hundred participants from across the country visited experimental sites and observed Spanish plantings.

"We see that the Penta and Makako varieties with high frost resistance and late flowering are suitable for Ukrainian conditions," the association stated. Both varieties were added to the State Register in 2023.

Conference participants visited mother-cutting gardens, seedling nurseries, and a demonstration industrial orchard. Presentations were delivered by the association's chief agronomist, Oleksiy Zelenko, and the head of the nursery, Valeriy Burov, who outlined several years of research results confirming the potential for almond cultivation in central Ukraine.

The event also included representatives from the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, the Institute of Climate-Oriented Agriculture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences, the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences, and the Mykolaiv National Agrarian University.

According to scientists, Spanish almond varieties show potential under Ukrainian conditions. Research and trials are ongoing in several regions. In Odessa, the company "Filbert" has planted initial orchards. A specialized nursery has been established in the Kherson region, and in Mykolaiv, a research industrial orchard has been created at the Mykolaiv National Agrarian University (MNAU). Additional trial plots are scheduled to be established this year at the Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences.
